Different websites go back and forth when listing the top board games of all time. Some say chess and some say Monopoly. I have combined two lists of popular games. One list had games ranked by sales. The other list had games ranked by votes. (See resources.)

Best Board Game of All Time – Chess

I am giving chess the edge because it has been around longer than either Boardwalk or Park Place. (Chess first appeared in India in the 6th century AD.) I love this game because there is no luck involved. You live by your brain; you die by your brain. So, even though I’ve only played about 50 mediocre games of chess in my life, I know that chess deserves to be numero uno.

Monopoly Game

There is a lot of luck involved in Monopoly, but it is a game that can be played by almost all ages. I’m not a huge Monopoly fan, but there is something fun about price gouging on rent when the renter is your little brother. And, when a player starts stacking up that real estate, any slacker can feel like Donald Trump. This is probably the best family game of all time. Just make sure the banker keeps his/her hands on the table, where you can see them.
